Each Thursday a group of local musicians get together and have a jam session at Henry and Wanda’s, located at 501 6th Street, made up of pick-up artists from across the city.
This week was a bit special because the bands were hosting a fundraiser for Mark Coleman, a long time sax player, who has been diagnosed with life threatening cancer.
Mike Walton, one of the organizers, said that the event was held because he likes how Mark has pursued the old style way of playing music and sees (Mark) him as family.
The event included a raffle for items donated by the club family, and the club made a one-dollar contribution for each drink sold.
About a 100 people drifted in and out of the popular downtown nightspot throughout the night.
Coleman said that he was glad to see that so many people still love his playing and came out to support him. “It is great to see so many people who care about me, and are wishing me well,” he said.
Coleman has been playing his alto sax with various bands since the early 70’s.
