Rogers to be named NAACP president

The local branch of the NAACP, which has faced organizational strife over the past year, could have a new president by the beginning of the year.

At their membership meeting held Saturday at Southside Center, Gloria Rogers, who was the organization 1st Vice-President, received the nod after President Michael Shields said he would not seek another two-year term, leaving her without opposition.

Rogers, a lifetime member, will take the helm of the country’s and Racine oldest civil rights organization in January.

Over the past year, some members felt that the organization president Shields was not taking the group in the right direction. They snarl that the organization which roots date back to the mid 40’s, had become a dysfunctional organization.

Rogers was out of town and could not be reached by phone for comments.

In addition, their will be several other offices to be filled. Only members in good standing with the NAACP can vote. Members will be able to cast their votes at the November meeting, which date and location has not been announced.

Congratulations to my Godmother Gloria Rogers. She has worked in many capacities in Racine County, and she has worked without end to make her community a better place for all.
Thanks for teaching me the path to helping others.

Congratulations, Gloria. Racine's NAACP needed a change. Mike Shields has always been a divider, an instigator and a racist. He NEVER should have been President. Good luck NAACP.

I can't believe they allowed Shields to remain as president this long after all the controversy. He should have been ousted months ago, and all the bank accounts should be gone over with a fine toothed comb by external accountants.
I suspect criminal charges would be in order if someone would do some investigating.
